The War At Home

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen on board. We can live with that—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That’s no big problem—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout “China, Madam/Sir” loudly whenever they hear the word “Spratly.” They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, “Long live Chairman Mao!” at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being.

Chip Tsao is a best-selling author and columnist. A former reporter for the BBC, his columns have also appeared in Apple Daily, Next Magazine and CUP Magazine, among others.

The article above written by Chip Tsao is purely satire. According to wikipidea – “Satire is often strictly defined as a literary genre or form; although, in practice, it is also found in the graphic and performing arts. In satire, human or individual vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humour in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit.”

I reacted so badly offended and insulted after reading the article for the first time and I also understand why there are lots of boiling comments thrown to Chip Tsao. But this is an article created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, or author, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation. His purpose is effective in a way that lots of readers reacted and commented on different way.

This article is also an eye opener to all of us around the world, that some Filipino maids in Hong Kong were underpaid and overworked by only receiving $3,580-a-month working more than 8 hours a day. I think, Chip is trying to expose some lapses his government failed to see, in a manner of satirical works like this to save himself from more complicated situations, because we already know what a Chinese government is.

After all, this kind of writings is Chip Tsao’s reputedly famous for.

  1. you fucking chineses punk. you have no right to say that. you are not even educated enough to understand dimplomatic issues regarding territories.. you should be ashamed you punk punkster

  2. this article was aired in TV patrol news, and some Filipino Officials overreacted, clearly a sign of ignorance. All the more made the article true.

Dont get it wrong, I myself am Filipino.

  3. If it’s so satirical, then I should also get paid for my rants, because people could react differently on them too, is that it? Satire is supposed to be “witty”, and Chip Tsao’s article is so off. There’s not enough reason for him to suddenly raise China as a superior country, and to think it’s better than America? Suuuuure.

Sure it’s an eye-opener, but what the heck is up with the insults? That’s not at all satirical, in the sense that it doesn’t show sarcasm or ironic views at all, and the fact that not everyone who read the article found it humorous nor witty is not questionable.

    To megarush:
The spark of nationalism is not at all a sign of ignorance. You should be ashamed of yourself. Please don’t claim to be a Filipino; it’s an embarrassment to us.

I think both of you are just straying off the normal flow to make yourself sound smarter.

  4. A column is made to express somebody’s opinion. And an opinion can be positive or negative depending on that person’s point of view, so it’s neither wrong nor right. But if you’re planning on criticizing on something, you should have enough evidence for your stance.

And…Chip Tsao had enough evidence for his stance. What he wrote was somewhat true and at the same time, to some extent, it’s wrong.

Filipino nationalism runs through every Filipino’s blood. Chinese nationalism runs into every Chinese’s blood as well. It’s normal to react in differently in the opposite sides.

  5. why chip tsao saying that for the filipino? it doesn’t mean that there’s no Chinese Servant? nor Chinese Indios? ac2lly if you can just look at very close in the philippines., there’s a lot of chinese living there and keep on pushing themselves to survive., why they choose philippines to live and to work or investing business? CHEAP TSAO, try to go in the philippines in Manila, Juan Luna, Divisoria or might be in binondo., at least you will aware how many PURE CHINESE living there.. and try to come back from your article and realizing that there’s something wrong., the issue regarding spratly’s island is none of your business nor mine because how dare you to say that if you are just only a Journalist? ur course is not related in analyzing the geographical territories?., that’s why not just only filipino are against to your article, even most of the Pure Chinese Blood and Fil-CHinese are worst mad to you, because ur such a Jerk., Thank you., but we knew that filipinos around th world, working abroad are more Great to work rather than some other nationalities, that’s why they keep on getting jobs for us, simple because they really want our Great Service to work and Filipino values that we use to show them while working., Im proud to be Filipino! Kapuso!

  6. I dont want to say this but, if you can take a look in Divisoria, Binondo & Juan Luna.. there’s a lot of PURE CHINESE living there and keep on pushing themselves to survive,. i tried many times to gone these places, you know what? they’re very polite and accomodating, eventhough they’re academically uneducated but they’re not worst Jerk and Boastful ANIMAL like you., i think you finished your college, but it looks like you forgot the good manners and values applying in your life. God is not sleeping, might not now but im sure there will be punishment for what you did and told about us.,
Like here in middle east, there’s a lot of Filipinos working here, and keep on other companies preferred filipinos because they knew as what they experienced that we are great in times of work, companionship and of course easy to catch up new things to learn., but one thing that i can assure you, every country, every nation, every people has their own differences., now you CHEAP TSAO as a CHINESE you are so much different to those Chinese i’ve met., You are so much worst rather than a PIG..

  7. hello..?

  8. Satirical… well he failed miserably to impart his message across.

    u dont even know racism

  10. If it was a satire, I did not get it. I did not find it witty enough to be a satire. Maybe its just a poorly written satire.

  11. the author stated some inappropriate lines to create an alarming feud between the two countries…and excuse me for calling us “nation of servants”…
did we ever call you “nation of fakes”. you are just being stereotypical. if your opinion is based on judgment.you are not worth it to be praised..
shame on you if your a Filipino and you get seconds thoughts on who to stand for.

  12. Im gonna bust this bastard chinese’s head when and if i see him, fuckin chinese man

  13. Im gonna bust this bastard chinese’s head when and if i see him, fuckin chinese man

  14. chip tsao’s article is impulsive, aggressive, and judgemental; obviously not very well thought of before written.
what right does he have to say that the PHILIPPINES is a nation of freaking SERVANTS??

if we pinoys are indeed servants then we’re the RICHEST servants in the world because business tycoons like henry sy, lucio tan, and gokongwei, who are CHINESE by the way, got rich because of the filipino people’s money-our money! we’re the ones responsible for putting these giants in their pedestals. Yes we are 3rd world, but we have one of the biggest malls in the world. we can ride in first class planes. we have cellphones. why? because we can afford it!

if chip tsao’s whining over the spratly issue then he can just hate the president, not the entire country. chip’s a crazy man; he needs serious medical attention. i won’t take an insult from a guy coming from a substandard imitator country breeding alien germs. you can quote me on that.

  15. simply racist, distasteful and ignorant.

anyway, so what exactly is that war in his own backyard is he referring to?

  16. Mumultuhin kta tsip chao ka!!!

Its good that you have been banned from the Philippines. You deserve to die, than be banned in our country. Calm down noypis…When I was a kid, my mom always told me to be kind to dumb animals.

Maybe its just the melamine and lead intake that made this dude crazy.

If we are indeed a nation of servants, then we should be proud of ourselves. Its alot better to struggle and work for a living in another country than the others out there who are putting poisonous stuff in their products to keep food on their table.

  26. His article makes me want to pick up an M16, load it up, sweep all the Chinatown of the Philippines and watch them scream as they get erased from my land as we take back what is rightfully ours.

I would love to cook them and make them the Siopao and export it to where they came from CHINA.

  27. dumb animas deserve to be killed…they are pests

  28. chip tsao you are insane!! we are not the land of servants ,,we are just hard working taht why we are loved by many foreigners
